Nearly one year after announcing its plans, vegan and vegetarian foods provider Organika Kitchen officially opened Monday in downtown New Canaan.

The eatery, well-established in Southport, soft-opened at 96 Main St. in the morning and welcomed its first customers into the newly remodeled, clean and well-lit space throughout the day.
“It’s a long time coming—very long time coming,” said Dimitri Pantzos, a partner in the business who is overseeing the New Canaan location day-to-day. “But we are open now so that’s all that really matters. I’m really excited.”

Known for its pancakes, mezza plates, smoothies, organic salads and juices, protein and açaí bowls, burgers and pizza, Organika joins a growing number establishments offering vegan and vegetarian foods in New Canaan, including Embody and Green & Tonic.
Organika’s commercial space at Main and East Avenue, formerly occupied by Kaahve, includes 12 tables, a hanging egg chair, bench backing to the large window on the corner, fridge of prepared foods and made-to-order salad bar.

Sandwich options include signature Kalifornia Burger with quinoa, sweet potato and black beans, lettuce, tomatoes, chipotle sauce and guacamole on a multigrain bun ($.9.75), Falafel on Pita with brown rice and portobello mushrooms, cashew cheese, basil pesto, peppers and onion on a multigrain ciabatta roll ($9.50) and Buffalo Cauliflower Wrap with roasted buffalo cauliflower, caesar dressing, romaine, parmesan cheese on a whole wheat wrap ($10).
One of its first customers, Phil Williams, the owner of New Canaan Music next door, tried a latte with oat milk.

“It was good,” Williams said of the hot drink. “I had never even heard of oat milk before and tried it this morning.”
Other items on Organika’s chalkboard menus include Margarita Pizza (tomato sauce, parmesan, mozzarella, topped with extra virgin olive oil and basil—$11), Protein Boost Smoothie (banana, almond butter, cacao powder, cinnamon, rice protein, raw honey and almond milk—$8.50), Beets By OGK Fresh Juice (beet, lemon, ginger, apple, celery—$8.50), Almond Crunch Bowl (banana, blueberries, açai, almond milk, mango, topped with strawberry, banana, granola, almond slices, almond butter and raw honey—$10.50) and Dragon Bomb Smoothie (mango, pineapple, dragon fruit, topped with pineapple, coconut and raw honey—$10).
