Four New Canaan Rams softball players earned conference postseason honors, as All-FCIAC teams were announced this week.
Leading the way for New Canaan were Molly and Rachel Keshin. The twin sisters—both sophomores—made the All-FCIAC Second Team after putting together outstanding offensive seasons in 2015.
Molly led New Canaan with a .491 batting average with team highs in both runs batted in (20) and runs scored (24). She also hit seven triples, tying former New Canaan great Cydney Ventura’s school record, set back in 2012. Keshin played fantastic defense for the Rams at catcher, committing just two errors en route to a .986 fielding percentage.
Rachel Keshin was a sparkplug for the Rams as a shortstop and leadoff hitter. Her 32 hits were tops on the team, good for the fifth-highest single season total in program history. She was second on the team in batting average, hitting at a .457 clip with 19 runs scored and nine runs batted in. Keshin also displayed a remarkable contact rate, striking out just five times in 74 plate appearances.
Also receiving postseason recognition were the New Canaan pitchers, senior Jamie Schlim and freshman Gillian Kane, both of whom received All-FCIAC Honorable Mentions.
Schlim led New Canaan with four wins and 90 strikeouts in 77.2 innings pitched. She also helped herself at the plate, driving in 15 runs with 3 doubles, a triple and nine runs scored on the year while hitting cleanup for the Rams.
Kane hit .387 in her debut year, batting second in the order in every game. She tied the Keshins with a team-high 4 doubles on the season with a triple and a home run. She placed second on the team with 23 runs scored while driving in 11. Kane also had success on the mound in 2015, winning 3 games and striking out 59 batters in 45 innings, including a school record-tying 13 against Bridgeport Central in just her second career start for New Canaan.
The Rams went 7-13 under head coach Danielle Simoneau, narrowly missing the state playoffs by one game. The outlook for New Canaan in 2016 is bright, as all but two players—Schlim and fellow senior Grace Wagner—will be returning next season.
