New Canaan’s brand-new trash receptacles have been ordered—14, at $1,500 apiece—and are about four weeks away from delivery, officials say.

A public-private effort where the town leaders are partnering with the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, a grassroots fundraising campaign is on the horizon to accept donations for naming and dedication opportunities for the units, with an eye on acquiring more, said Tiger Mann, assistant director of the Department of Public Works.

“Right now, the thought is [to install receptacles along] Elm and Main, but we have 52 throughout town that we want to change over,” Mann said.

As a stopgap, Mann said, the town may gather up those receptacles among the current fleet that are in better shape and “spread them out into the outlying areas” that don’t have any. Some of those areas may include streets that are in the downtown but beyond the magic circle, such as Pine Street.

The challenge there, he said, is one of staffing, since the garbage cans needs to be emptied “pretty much every day.”

“But certainly we can do that,” Mann said, as more new receptacles are acquired.
