Police before dawn Tuesday arrested a 20-year-old Stamford man and charged him with illegal possession of weapons in a motor vehicle.

At about 1:15 a.m. on May 1, an officer on patrol saw a vehicle traveling off of the Merritt Parkway at Exit 36 run a red light, according to a police report, turning right onto Old Stamford Road without making a complete stop, according to a police report.

During a subsequent stop at Old Stamford and Talmadge Hill Roads, the officer saw a the black grip of a handgun partially concealed by a towel, in the rear passenger seat, the report said.

The motorist told the officer that it was a BB gun, it said.

The weapon appeared similar to a .357 revolver with chrome and a black handle, the report said.

The officer seized the BB gun, which was loaded with six rounds in the cylinder, it said.

The officer then found another six BB rounds in the vehicle, police said.

The motorist was held on $5,000 bond and scheduled to appear May 1 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

  1. Question? When did it become illegal to own a BB Gun
and if it is not does it become illegal when you put it into a Motor Vehicle — I think it would be ill advise to have a BB gun that looks
so much like a real gun in plain view — that said anyone know
the answer ? do we have Hartford to thank for this law

    • Rich it’s not illegal to own a BB gun. But you cannot keep it loaded and within reach in a motor vehicle, look at the statute for this charge: “The provisions of this section shall not apply to … any person having a BB. gun in a vehicle provided such weapon is unloaded and stored in the trunk of such vehicle or in a locked container other than the glove compartment or console.”

These are things that BB and other gun owners should know when they purchase a weapon. And if you aren’t sure, don’t be running a red light in front of a cop.
