FY 2021 budget

Letter: Don’t Rush New Canaan’s Budget Vote

By Betty Lovastik | March 24, 2020

Due to the corona virus pandemic, Connecticut’s governor recently issued guidelines that delay decision-making on our state’s 2020-21 budget by 30 days.

On March 23, 2020 The Darien Times reported that Darien’s Board of Finance made the decision to delay its budget process by one month, taking advantage of the governor’s new guidelines. Darien’s Board of Finance will vote on that Town’s budget and set its important mill rate at its May 14 meeting.

Darien’s mill rate will be officially set June 10, 2020 when Darien’s Representative Town Meeting votes. Legislative powers of the Town of Darien are vested in that Town’s RTM’ which, according to its website, is composed of 100 members representing the Town’s six districts. The original date for the RTM budget vote was May 11. Following our governor’s issued guidelines, the RTM vote was moved to June 10.

Colm Dobbyn

Letter: Colm Dobbyn for Town Council

By Betty Lovastik | October 22, 2019

To the Editor:

I don’t often write letters endorsing candidates because, like many of you who have lived and volunteered in this town for several decades, we are friends, neighbors, and volunteers who work and live harmoniously for 364 days of the year.

On Election Day, however, we must decide among many well-qualified candidates from both sides. Some vote strictly by party, others do not. For this year’s race I highly recommend Colm Dobbyn for Town Council. He has lived in New Canaan for 26 years, has served on Inland Wetlands Commission for 14 years, while raising two children and brings to the table a sharp analytical mind. Colm can focus on the issues, rather than play politics. His only agenda is to do the best he can to serve all of us to make New Canaan a fine community. According to the town website, the primary responsibilities of Town Council encompass bylaws, ordinances and approval of appropriations.  These are all skill sets that Colm Dobbyn possesses.
