At about 7:43 p.m. Sunday, New Canaan Fire Department members, career and volunteer, raced to the blaze at 986 South Ave.

No one was hurt in the fire, according to Fire Chief Jack Hennessey. Its cause is under investigation, he said.

The 2-acre property includes the barn as well as a 1790-built house and cottage, tax records show.

According to First Selectman Rob Mallozzi, the fire was severe enough that embers from it caused a brush fire on the property directly to the north. Firefighters on scene were concerned about that brush fire reaching a home there, he said.

Firefighters from Wilton and Darien responded to the scene and Vista, N.Y. firefighters covered the New Canaan firehouse while all units responded to the South Avenue fire, Mallozzi said. The fire was under control by about 8:15 p.m., Mallozzi said.

Of the response, Mallozzi said: “It is a huge turnout of New Canaan volunteer and paid professionals, plus other towns.”
