A former Stamford cop was charged with impersonating an officer after New Canaan police stopped him on the northern end of town Thursday for driving a car whose registration was expired.
At about 5:24 p.m. on June 5, police saw a white 2002 Buick Regal on Lukes Wood Road near Oenoke Ridge Road whose registration came back as expired, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department.
Stopping the vehicle, an officer saw two blue police shirts in the rear of the car—as well as a clipboard and ticket pads—and the driver, a 61-year-old Stamford man, said he was, “on the job.”
The man said he was a police officer but when asked for his ID and badge, the man said he was not carrying it, according to a police report.
The man’s driver’s license also was suspended indefinitely, Ogrinc said.
Contacting Stamford police, the department found out he had been an officer there but had not been for many years.
He was charged with operating an unregistered motor vehicle, operating with a suspended license and impersonating an officer. He was released on $5,000 bond and scheduled to appear June 19 in state Superior Court in Stamford.
