New Canaan Police say they’re caring for a kitten found dangerously cold and lethargic during last week’s rainstorm.

At about 9:03 a.m. on Sept. 30, the children of an Old Kings Highway family found the kitten on or their porch and placed the shivering animal in their garage and “kindly tried to give it TLC,” said Officer Allyson Halm, head of the department’s Animal Control section.

The family agreed to give Halm custody and she immediately brought the animal to a vet, where it rebounded from a 90-degree body temperature and was transferred into the care of Animal Control at the Lakeview Avenue shelter, she said.

Named ‘Ripley,’ the estimated 5- or 6-week-old kitten is a male domestic short-hair tuxedo type, Halm said.

Anyone handling a stray animal or orphaned wildlife is encouraged to use gloves or a towel and not to have direct contact, Halm said. Should a person get scratched or bitten while handling such an animal, it complicates officials’ process in ensuring the animal is healthy and gets help.

Should the animal become available for adoption, NewCanaanite.com will post a notice in the weekly “Did You Hear” news summary.
