The summer season of music has begun, with the Waveny Summer Concert Series kicking off Wednesday. Hosted by the New Canaan Recreation Department, the series will run every Wednesday throughout the summer from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the lawn behind the Waveny house.

Waveny summerThe Recreation Department encourages New Canaan families to bring a chair or blanket, a picnic supper, and enjoy the music at all of the free concerts throughout the summer. The summer lineup features Kenn Morr, Cool Shoes, Gunsmoke, Airborne, The Bookends, Doug Allen, T&T Dreamin’, Billy and the Showmen, Otis and the Hurricanes, Jon Saxon, and Fairfield Counts Band.

“Some of the groups we’ve had we’ve had for several years,” Recreation Director Steve Benko told New Canaanite. “Some, or one or two [groups] might be new, [but] most of them we’ve had [perform] previous years. We’ve just had bands through different venues and people like the music. They’ve been great so we’ve had them back each year.”

The bands performing in the summer are from a mix of different genres including Rock n’ Roll, jazz, and country. The groups also come from many different places around the nation.

“Some are [from] Fairfield County,” Benko said. “I’ve had some as far away as Virginia. I got one guy [Doug Allen] who played for us for several years who relocated to Nashville and he’s going to come back and play for us this year.”

This week’s act, Kenn Morr, is a singer that played in the series last summer. “Last year was the first year he played for us and he was good,” Benko said. “I think he played a variety of Rock n’ Roll. He was very good so we looked at it and said we’d have him back again.”

Benko encourages all New Canaanites to take part in the concert series on the Waveny lawn this summer. “On the lawn [New Canaanites can] enjoy the evening, listen to music, talk to friends,” Benko said. “It’s just a nice social event for the whole town.”
