Police are investigating a 27-year-old Turning Mill Lane woman’s complaint about an online scam involving a job board.
According to police, the woman came to headquarters at 1:43 p.m. on April 28 to report that she’d been searching for a job on Care.com, which helps people find and manage “quality care for their loved ones,” according to its website.
According to the complainant, through the site she connected with another woman who had limited ability to communicate but said she had an open babysitting position.
The woman, who said she was hiring, convinced the New Canaan complainant that she needed to buy an electric wheelchair for her son before she could hire the town resident as a babysitter, according to a police report.
She sent a check in the amount of $2,450 and told the New Canaan woman to keep $400, the report said, and that she needed the town resident to send other parts of the balance to various accounts.
The New Canaan woman found out later that the $2,450 check was no good, police said.
