Police are looking for any information about a dog described as a golden retriever mix that bit a woman near Benedict Hill and Evergreen Roads in New Canaan around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

When the woman pulled her car over and got out to see whether the dog had a tag on it, the animal bit her, according to Animal Control Officer Maryann Kleinschmitt.

Because it’s unknown whether the dog was up-to-date on vaccinations, the woman has had to start a series of rabies shots, Kleinschmitt said.

“We’re trying to find the dog so that she can stop the rabies series,” Kleinschmitt said.

The dog’s right foreleg had been shaved as if someone took blood from it, Kleinschmitt said, and it was described as about half the size of a normal golden retriever.

A report on the incident came in to New Canaan Police around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Anyone with information about the dog or its owner is asked please to call New Canaan Police at 203-594-3500.
