Station Eats Has Averaged 96.8 Out of 100 on Unannounced Health Inspections

Station Eats, the fresh burger and hot dog joint on South Avenue, has earned two perfect marks and consistently high overall scores from health inspectors since it opened in 2010, records show. Out of a possible 100 points, the made-to-order eatery has earned an average of 96.8 through 16 unannounced inspections by sanitarians with the New Canaan Health Department, according to a review of the organization’s files at Town Hall. Sanitarians use a state Department of Public Health standard, citing eateries for violations that range in seriousness and corresponding weight from 1 to 4 points. A “failed” inspection is triggered either by one or more 4-point violations or a total score of less than 80 points. Owned by John Gallagher, according to health records, Station Eats at 19 South Ave.

Coming Sunday Oct. 25: New Canaan Chamber of Commerce 34th Annual Halloween Parade

The New Canaan Chamber of Commerce will put on its 34th annual Halloween Parade on Sunday, Oct. 25. The event kicks off at noon with families’ gathering in the Park Street parking lot to receive goodie bags (while supplies last!) with a 1 p.m. Parade kick off lead by Old Faithful, rain or shine. The “Party” at the Park Street lot will include fun for all. The School of Rock will serenade parade-goers with Halloween tunes such as the “Monster Mash,” “Werewolves of London” and “Ghostbusters” while Toddlertime Nursery School will host the Great Scirico, who will be creating balloon animals.

Expanded Caffeine & Carburetors Launches Sunday

New Canaan residents, business owners, traffic police and volunteers are eagerly awaiting the arrival of an estimated 2,000 classic car enthusiasts downtown Sunday morning for the 2014 debut of “Caffeine & Carburetors.”

A grassroots event launched four years ago by town resident Doug Zumbach—owner of the eponymous, gourmet coffee shop on the corner of Grove and Pine Streets—Caffeine & Carburetors has become popular enough that, under its founder’s direction and with support from town officials and the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, it’s grown into an inclusive community occasion. Zumbach—owner of a 64 Plymouth Fury, ‘72 Porsche 911T and ‘77 Porsche 930 Turbo—told NewCanaanite.com that he’s parking one of his own cars in front of the iconic clock midway up the main drag of Elm Street, a spot that will bookend a line of cars that will run the length of Pine and then, for the first time, jag up Park and then down Elm. “I want a certain continuity, a flow for the show,” Zumbach said. “I want a visual continuity as well as physical cars to be down there [on Elm]. Mine is going to be there.

Biz on Biz: Life Aquatic on Station Eats Cheeseburger (Extra Hot Peppers)

For this installment of Biz on Biz, we asked Bobby Johnson, livestock manager at Life Aquatic on South Avenue (across from the Mobil, near Mackenzie’s) to tell us about a favorite item or service at another New Canaan business. His answer: cheeseburger from Station Eats down the street, with lettuce, pickles, extra hot peppers and fries on the side. “I like the burger, they make it well,” said Johnston, a Fairfield resident. “It’s made in front of you and all natural. Just a very well-taken-care-of place.”

The cheeseburgers are popular and getting extra pickles is “fairly common,” Station Eats line cook Cesar Suero said, “because they give you a kind of spice, because the cheeseburgers have a kind of mild cheese.”

“When I first tried one, it’s like I can’t eat them anywhere else anymore.
