‘We Are Very Community Based’: NCHS Grad, Wife Take Over Family’s ‘Key Holder’ Business

New Canaan native Ron Bentley was on a golf course with his uncle at the family’s regular outing in Vermont three years ago when he began to consider taking over the family business. His uncle, Bobby Thompson, had launched Key Holder Services Inc, an alarm response and vacation house check service, in 1990, and his aunt, Sue Thompson, had been an owner. “I started talking to him about selling the business to me, and I just said, ‘Please give me first opportunity to keep it in the family,’ ” Bentley told NewCanaanite.com on a recent morning. Today, Ron Bentley and his wife, Kelly, are about one year into ownership and operation of a business that sees them connect with area residents in a personal way to ensure their homes are safe and secure—already a priority for Ron Bentley as a longtime New Canaan police officer. “It was a risk but I think it’s a good risk,” Ron Bentley said of the decision to acquire the business from his uncle.

According to a separation agreement obtained this week by NewCanaanite.com through a Freedom of Information Act request, a former assistant to the New Canaan High School athletic director had been overpaid $30,000 by the Board of Education during the 2015-16 academic year. Anne Tomaselli paid the school district back that money, under the agreement, and the Board of Ed accepted her resignation “in lieu of any proceedings” concerning the termination of her employment. The agreement also specified that she would not seek future employment with the schools. Many in town knew Tomaselli as ticket sales supervisor at Dunning Stadium. Asked how she came to be overpaid by $30,000, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Bryan Luizzi said in an email: “When the district moved payroll in-house, a stipend that was given 3 [times] a year for additional facility support in athletics at NCHS was miscoded as a recurring payment.

‘She Even Had a Bottle of Water for Me’: Letters of Appreciation for New Canaan Police

Police Chief Leon Krolikowski on Wednesday night spotlighted some of the outstanding work of the department’s officers. During the Police Commission’s regular meeting, he cited a series of letters of appreciation from the community. 

“I think it’s important to better recognize the good work of our officers which we do not do often enough,” Krolikowski said at the meeting, held in the New Canaan Police Department. 

He added: “I’m sure myself and on behalf of the Commission, we should extend our thanks to all of our officers for the work that they do. We are about to enter into budget season when we are talking about statistics and numbers and costs and some things are difficult to measure, and these letters that we get are the kinds of things we should be highlighting.”

“I am writing to express my wife’s and my own thanks and gratitude to your Department and especially to your officer Adams … On July 18th at around 7:30 a.m. my wife fell in our apartment at The Inn where we reside. While unhurt, she was unable to get up on her own even with my insufficient strength to help (we are 92 and 94 years old)—911 was called. Officer Adams showed up first, took in and evaluated the situation.
