Here’s What’s Happening at Park and Pine Streets

The renovation of the former Post Office building at Park and Pine Streets is underway—a project that’s expected to transform the single-story structure dramatically in preparation for a new office use. Vacant since Mrs. Green’s closed in October 2016, the building at 2 Pine St. is undergoing a $250,000 renovation in order to make it ready for employees of Merrill Lynch, which will move catty-corner into the refurbished space. The owners of the building are “very excited” to have Merrill Lynch moving in to the space, its property manager told NewCanaanite.com in an email. The owners are in the process of renovating the exterior of the building which includes new windows, siding and a facade upgrade, the property manager said.

Bank Use Proposed for Former ‘Mrs. Greens’ Space

The owners of the former Post Office building at Park and Pine Streets, most recently home to Mrs. Green’s grocery store, have applied to the town to allow for the prominent structure to be used as a bank. The owners of 2 Pine St. have entered into lease negotiations with Bank of America Corporation/Merrill Lynch to take over the space, according to an application filed Oct. 1 with Planning & Zoning. 

“In connection with the change of use to a bank, relatively minor changes to the building as detailed on the plans submitted herewith are planned which will result in a more elegant looking structure,” said a site plan statement filed on behalf of the property owners by attorney Steve Finn, a partner at Stamford-based Wofsey, Rosen, Kweskin & Kuriansky. The 6,320-square-foot property “is located at the corner of two highly visible gateways to downtown, Pine and Park Streets,” Finn said in the site plan statement.

Here’s a short list of sweeping economic crises that have affected, directly or indirectly, every U.S. business since 1982: Black Monday, savings and loan crisis, subprime mortgage crisis and Great Recession. Locally, success in business involves nimbleness and acumen, and far more than that—interpersonal skills, involvement, diligence and imagination. Recently, the head of an organization that’s central for many local businesses, the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce, came by chance across a list of 28 current members that also were members back in 1982. “They’ve supported the chamber, supported the town and been here for a long, long time,” Executive Director Tucker Murphy said. “We want to congratulate them on that.”
