Selectmen Approve $9,000 Contract for New Furniture at Senior Center

Town officials last week approved an approximately $9,000 contract with a Wallingford-based for new furniture at the local senior center. The Board of Selectmen voted 3-0 in favor of the $9,166.10 contract for new chairs and tables from INSALCO Corporation. 

Recreation Director Steve Benko said the chairs in the dining area at Lapham Community Center are “have seen thousands of hours of use” and that the laminate on the tabletops has worn off in spots. The frames of the chairs in place now are OK “but the fabric seats are all stained” and unusable,” Benko told the selectmen at their regular meeting, held in Town Hall. First Selectman Kevin Moynihan and Selectmen Kit Devereaux and Nick Williams voted for the contract. The selectmen asked Benko how old the existing furniture is (10 to 20 years) and what the town intends to do with it (get rid of it).

Officials Approve $97,000 Contract To Replace Day Care Center Roof

Town officials last week approved a contract worth nearly $100,000 for the installation of a new roof at a local day care. Department of Public Works Building Superintendent Bill Oestmann proposed the contract with Stamford-based J. Antonelli Roofing at the Board of Selectmen’s Aug. 6 regular meeting, held at Town Hall. 

Approved 3-0 by First Selectman Kevin Moynihan and Selectmen Nick Williams and Kit Devereaux, the project will see the rear portion of the Day Care Center of New Canaan’s roof replaced, Oestmann said. “It’s a flat roof, it’s 30-something years old, it is leaking,” he said. For the past several years, Oestmann said, he has had contractors patch the roof, but now a review by engineers has concluded that “it’s time” for a new roof.

First Selectman: Locust Avenue Lot Repaving Project Likely Put Off to Next Summer

The widely anticipated repaving of the Locust Avenue Lot likely will take place next summer instead of this year, as originally planned, officials say. First Selectman Kevin Moynihan said during an update to the Parking Commission at the appointed body’s most recent meeting that he had “thought it was going to get done in August, but I don’t think it’s going to get done in August” now. Saying he was concerned about “people’s need for parking,” Moynihan told the Commission during its July 11 meeting that the work will involve “re-architecting” the lot. 

“They are going to redo the lot,” Moynihan said at the meeting, held in Town Hall. The town’s budget for the current fiscal year includes a $500,000 item for “parking lot construction” that had been thought to go toward the heavily used and deteriorating permit-and-meter parking lot next to the Post Office. Earlier this year, public works officials said that the repaving project could end up more expensive than originally planned if, when the town starts to dig up the area, it runs into the demolished, buried remains buildings that used to stand there. 

Thought nearly three years ago to be right for an estimated $4 million decking job, the lot is to be removed and replaced during a single estimated two-month period, public works officials have said.

NCHS Senior Interns Continue in Town Hall Positions After Graduation

Before starting his New Canaan High School Senior Internship in the Department of Public Works, Kevin O’Brien Brunner said he never thought about how the town ran. “I just assumed that things happened,” Brunner said on a sunny afternoon last week. “Being able to actually work here, I not only get to see what’s behind the curtain—how it actually runs—but I also get to meet the real people with real lives who are making it run,” he said. The NCHS Senior Internship Program has grown in its nine years that nearly all seniors participate in it. What’s more rare is for those college-bound teens to work the summer after graduating NCHS at their internship sites.

Town Officials Approve $132,000 Contract To Improve Country Club Road

Following complaints from residents of the neighborhood, officials on Tuesday approved a $132,000 contract with a New Canaan company to improve an important local road. The Board of Selectmen voted 3-0 at its regular meeting to approve the contract with New Canaan-based Peter Lanni, Inc. for improvements to Country Club Road. According to Director of Public Works Tiger Mann, the work will solve problems such as drainage issues and “alligatoring,” which occurs when a pavement surface develops interconnected cracks resembling alligator skin. Mann told the selectmen at the meeting, held in Town Hall, that the project was in response to “a series of complaints and requests” that had been received “from residents in the area.” The final contract price was lower than the initial bid received from Peter Lanni Inc., Mann said.
