Join the Linda W Daniel Foundation (LWDF) at Camp Playland on Saturday, May 18th for family fun from 3 – 5pm. LWDF’s mission is to “challenge the athlete in you to fight cancer today”. The family run foundation raises cancer prevention awareness and helps turn awareness into action. Activities include ropes course, boating, fishing, mini golf, archery, basketball, soccer, go karts, inflatables & a s’mores station! While the weather could have been better for the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce’s annual Halloween Parade, hundreds of ghosts and goblins headed over to the YMCA for a Halloween Family event. The party started at noon with activities and entertainment for all to enjoy. The School of Rock serenaded parade goers with Halloween tunes and a flash mob of New England Academy of Dance zombies danced to “Thriller.”
Pet Pantry hosted the Great Scirico who created balloon animals for all to enjoy and “Marshall” from Pet Patrol was on hand to greet trick-or-treaters thanks to Toddlertime Nursery School. We are so grateful that the YMCA stepped in to save the day and allowed us to have the event in their beautiful new gym. We gave out more than 750 goody bags and thanks go to Joe Vittoria —Promotion in Motion, Camp Playland, Jack and Jill Petsitting, Friends of Mead Park, TD Bank, Mackenzies, Walter Stewart’s Market, Vineyard Vines and Toddlertime Nursery School.
Walter Bloom had served as a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and when he returned at its close to his young bride, Pearl, in their native Brooklyn, he set out to find a job. A background from the Savage School for Physical Education and a bachelor’s degree in guidance from Rutgers University in hand, Bloom found work at a public school on Ninth Avenue in Brooklyn—and he stayed there until a kid pulled a knife on him while breaking up a fight, his widow recalled on a recent afternoon. “He said, ‘I went through the war, I came out OK—I’m not going to stay here,’ ” Pearl Bloom recalled from the sunny living room of the combination home-and-camp-building where she and her husband would launch a beloved local business while raising their family—an overlapping work-life world that has served generations of New Canaanites well. In 1947, the young couple moved out of the city and into Stamford’s Cove neighborhood. Walter Bloom found work as physical education director at the Stamford Jewish Center and, two years later, as a teacher at the newly built Dolan Middle School.
