Baskin Robbins Owner Plans Password-Coded ‘BOGO’ Trial for Tuesday

Following a widely discussed tantrum had by a local woman at Baskin Robbins this week, the shop’s owner is seeking to gauge the public’s interest in continuing a longstanding promotion. Though the popular “Buy-One-Get-One free” or “BOGO” Tuesdays at Baskin-Robbins fuel the busiest nights of the week at the Main Street ice cream and candy shop, they also tend to bring in non-regular customers, according to owner Anna Valente. This week, a woman appeared to become dissatisfied after her free 2-scoop sundae with two hot toppings melted, and returned to Baskins, cut the line, berated Valente’s workers then tossed the dessert on the floor behind the counter. The entire scene was caught on video and the woman returned the next morning to demand back the money for the paid dessert her husband had purchased (a banana split) in order to take advantage of the BOGO promotion. The incident left Valente second-guessing whether to continue BOGO Tuesdays—a national promotion that she continued voluntarily five years ago because New Canaanites seemed to like it.

After Angry Woman Throws Ice Cream Sundae, ‘BOGO Tuesdays’ at Baskin Robbins in Jeopardy

A cherished sweet-treat tradition in New Canaan is in danger of going away following an incident involving an angry customer Tuesday night. Buy-one, Get-one free or “BOGO” Tuesdays at Baskin-Robbins have been a popular tradition in town for more than a decade, preserved here even after the national brand moved away from it more than five years ago. But that may have changed for good after a woman threw a free sundae on the floor behind the counter at the Main Street ice cream and candy shop after berating its workers. At about 8:15 p.m., the shop’s manager said, a man ordered a banana split sundae and a two-scoop sundae with two hot toppings (hot fudge and peanut butter sauce) and one cold topping (marshmallows), for the BOGO promotion. The entire order cost $9.45—the cost of the banana split plus 85 cents each for the two extra toppings.

Letter: Great Thanksgiving at the Food Pantry

Dear Editor,

On behalf of the New Canaan Food Pantry, we would like to thank the United Methodist Church for the generous grant they have given us. This grant, in conjunction with ACME Markets in New Canaan, has made it possible for The Food Pantry to provide our clients with a bountiful Thanksgiving dinner. Our families will have all the items needed to celebrate with a traditional feast —cheese and crackers, stuffing, potatoes, cranberries, carrots, olives, vegetables, butter and pies. Baskin Robbins has also generously donated ice cream for each family. Gazy Farms, members of the New Canaan Farmer’s Market, has provided the fresh vegetables and produce for a special celebration.

We got a heads-up on Twitter from New Canaanite Peter “The Bushman” Bush of The FOX 95.9 FM about a recently redecorated roof of The Veggie Barn on Cross Street. Looks like town resident and Veggie Barn owner Santo Silvestro supports Donald Trump in ’16. Silvestro wasn’t immediately available for comment. The rooftop likely will be visible to any planes passing overhead. As Bush later Tweeted: “A little something for the Donald to see from 10K.”

While Peachwave on Forest Street did close last weekend as planned (though the team there decided last-minute to extend by one day, through Sunday), company officials tell us now that a reopening is possible.
