A 43-year-old New Canaan man died Thursday during what appears to be a snowboarding accident at a Truckee, Calif. resort, according to multiple news reports.
A CBS affiliate and news website serving the area, near the Nevada border at Lake Tahoe reported on Friday that the deceased is Michael North of New Canaan.
According to the Sierra Sun, the man appeared to have fallen headfirst into a tree well. He was nonresponsive when emergency services providers arrived, according to the news outlet.
Officials with the resort, Northstar California, issued the following statement, according to KTVN: “Northstar Ski Patrol and the entire Vail Resorts family extend our deepest sympathy and support to our guest’s family and friends.”
No one witnessed the incident, KTVN said.
A “tree well” is an area of loose snow around a tree trunk that presents a hazard to passersby who may fall into them. According to the Sierra Sun report, those who first came upon the local man had trouble pulling him out of the snow straightaway and attempts to revitalize him through CPR were not successful.
