Though the Police Benevolent Association is running a legitimate fundraising campaign, New Canaan Police are urging residents to beware a separate scam involving someone posing as a member of the department and selling a sticker for donations.
Late Wednesday afternoon, a person phoned a private residence and claimed to be collecting donations on behalf of the New Canaan Police Department, Chief Leon Krolikowski said. The caller agreed to go to the donor’s house in order to exchange a sticker for a donation, the chief said.
“This is not authorized and similar calls should be reported to the police department” at 203-594-3500, Krolikowski said.
Officer Roberto Lopez of the New Canaan Police Department said the PBA is raising money now through a telephone fundraising campaign. A contracted company, TCI, is operating the fundraiser and Lopez urged any residents who are unsure about whether it’s legitimate to take down the caller’s name, phone the department (same number as above) and check it against a list at headquarters.
Though TCI is not sell stickers per se, Lopez said, the company does offer to send stickers to PBA supporters and to put donors’ names on a safety brochure.
