A 49-year-old South Salem, N.Y. man is in critical condition after crashing his car just after midnight Sunday in northern New Canaan, police said.
The man suffered life-threatening injuries when, traveling northbound on Route 123/Smith Ridge Road, he struck the median at North Wilton Road, crossed into the oncoming traffic lane and came to a stop in the area of 866 Smith Ridge Road, according to Sgt. Peter Condos of the New Canaan Police Department.
Residents in the area phoned 9-1-1 after they heard the sound of screeching tires followed by a loud crash, Condos said. It isn’t clear at what speed the man was traveling or whether substances played a factor, police said. Authorities are seeking toxicology reports, Condos said.
The man was driving a Toyota Prius, police said. No other vehicles were involved and he had no passengers in the car, police said. He was air-lifted to Yale New Haven Hospital. Police withheld his name.
