Police are investigating a 55-year-old New Canaan woman’s report that someone committed fraud by using her own Social Security number to file taxes.
The IRS mailed paperwork to the woman saying that she’d been selected for an identity review, and listed the name ‘Maurice Johnson’ of Indiana on the agency’s form.
It also included the complainant’s own name and address, according to a police report.
Sgt. Carol Ogrinc of the New Canaan Police Department said the woman did receive a U.S. Treasury check in the amount of $3,155 with the name ‘Maurice Johnson’ on it. The IRS instructed her to mail the check back to them and phone the police, which she did, at 2:55 p.m. on Aug. 14.

Police are investigating a 48-year-old New Jersey man’s complaint that his wallet went missing as he fell asleep on a New Canaan-bound Metro-North Railroad train last week.
The man said he thought the wallet had been in his rear pocket when he fell asleep on the train, though when he got to town it was missing, according to a police report. Getting off of the train, he phoned to cancel his credit cards and found out someone already had used—or tried to use—them, the report said.
It had been used at the Gulf here in town and then at a Rite Aid in Norwalk, police said. There, he spent $105.99 in one transaction and then attempted to use it again, police said.
An employee asked for ID when the suspect—described later as a white male about six feet tall with a medium build and light brown or blonde hair, wearing gray pants, a white buttoned-down collared shirt, black shoes and a white visor—tried to purchase items with an AmEx gift card after the credit card had been declined, police said.
