Police are investigating a 26-year-old New Canaan woman’s complaint that someone pulled credit cards from her wallet in her unlocked car last week and charged nearly $600 on them.

A $50 Visa gift card and $40 in cash also was reported stolen from the woman’s 2011 Mercedez Benz, according to a police report. The theft occurred some time between 3 p.m. on Jan. 20 and 12 p.m. the following day, the report said.

The car had been parked off of White Oak Shade Road, the report said.

The victim told police that her wallet had been inside her pocketbook, which she left on the center console, the report said. She later noticed several credit cards missing and discovered that charges had been made on them after trying to cancel straightaway, then she called police, the report said.

A 47-year-old East Avenue man told police that he’d been bilked out of nearly $2,000 in a Craigslist scam.

He was selling a motorcycle vest on the website for $100, and after two individuals from the United Kingdom contacted him on his cellphone, he received a cashier’s check in the amount of $1,980, according to a police report.

That was on Jan. 21, and he received the check via wire transfer.

He deposited it, and then the buyers contacted him to say their “assistant” had sent the wrong check and could he send $1,880 back to a U.K. account, according to a police report.

He did that, and within the hour, the bank told him that the original check had been fraudulent.

Police are investigating.
