Though scores of businesses have opened and closed in New Canaan storefronts through the decades, the buildings that have housed them in many cases have been preserved through the years. The photo gallery above, depicting the downtown from several different angles in the 1950s, was compiled with help from the New Canaan Historical Society.
The cars in the Santa Claus photo look more like 1960’s vintage cars, so that photo should be relabeled?
Thanks Jim—we saw that, too, so let’s call it ’60s for that photo. Syd was a great photographer and he wasn’t particularly inclined to label his photos straightaway or accurately later on, which I’m sure is why the Historical Society has it marked as it does.
