A new wellness spa that offers infrared saunas has applied to the town for permission to occupy a first-floor commercial space on Main Street.

The business planned for 78 Main St., called ‘Calmë,’ will include a retail section of skin care products in front and five sauna rooms in back, according to an application filed Jan. 28 with Planning & Zoning.

Under the New Canaan Zoning Regulations, service establishments are permitted in the Retail A zone with site plan approval as long as a retail component faces the street and occupies a certain amount of the commercial space (see page 74 here).

Two wellness-related businesses on the same block of Main Street—Club Pilates at number 70 and Stretch Lab at 86—recently received approval from the P&Z Commission under the same provision.

P&Z is scheduled to take up the Calmë application at its regular meeting, to be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Town Hall.

According to a description of the business that’s included in the application, Calmë saunas will include “acoustic resonance therapy,” which “creates an environment for the body to experience the benefits of sound and vibration healing in an integrative way—part of a holistic approach to healthy living.”

“Feeling the music people hear brings their bodies into harmony physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually and environmentally,” the application said.

The application also touts the wellness benefits of infrared saunas and Calmë’s “relaxing atmosphere.”

“Calmë is a needed addition to the New Canaan downtown area,” the application said.

The commercial building at 78 Main St. is owned by a limited liability company whose principal is a Darien man, according to records on file with the Connecticut Secretary of the State.
