April showers bring May flowers…and lots of rainouts. Mother Nature took a toll on the New Canaan Baseball schedule this past week, although several teams were able to play through the raindrops. Here is a recap of the action:

AA Division

A’s – 5; Angels – 4

In a rain-soaked AA division battle, the Stamford Insurance Group Athletics defeated the Mellick and Sexton Angels by a score of 5-4.  The A’s attack was led by the solid hitting of Jared Kramer. Defensive stars were catcher Henry Sokolowski and first baseman Phillip Etergino.

Edward Gentner and Stephen Riccardi were solid hurlers for the Angels, who mounted a late-inning comeback when Ryan Anderson and Colton Howe raced around to score on a Colin Tiscornia base hit. The A’s managed to hold on for the win.

A Division

Cardinals – 9; Braves – 0

The Apple Cart Food Co. Cardinals defeated the Walter Stewart’s Braves 9-0 on Saturday, in a game that was much closer than the score indicates.

Tucker Milligan of the Cardinals leads off 1B.

Brian Balkun led the Braves on the mound and at the plate.  He laced a single to center to kick things off.  The Braves would load the bases, but Jack Sheffield registered a key strikeout to end the threat.

The Cards jumped up 3-0 when Bradley Werneburg slugged a 3-run double.  Redbird hitters Henry Silva, Sam Bisesi and Charlie O’Connor would stroke singles to drive in runs.  The damage could have been worse were it not for the strong defensive play of George Stewart behind the dish and Flynn Coffey who gunned down a runner at 3rd from left field.

Connor Lytle of the Mets makes a great catch at first.

The Braves’ Walker Blair scorched a single off the shin of Brendan Hagan to start the 4th, but Hagan, who registered 5 Ks over 2 innings, would buckle down to close the game for the Cards.
