Police at 7:58 p.m. on July 4 arrested an 18-year-old New Canaan man after finding three fake IDs and open alcohol in his car after stopping him for speeding.

Police stopped the teen, a Bittersweet Lane resident, in his 2011 Volvo as he drove north on Weed Street near Wahackme Road, going faster than the 30 mph speed limit, according to Sgt. Carol Ogrinc.

Detecting a faint odor of marijuana during the stop, the officer asked the motorist if he had smoked recently, and the teen replied “a few weeks ago,” Ogrinc said.

The driver then told police that there was a beer bottle with a small amount of alcohol in it but that it wasn’t his and had been left there, according to a police report.

The officer then received consent to search the car and found three fake Ids, each making the teen 21 or older—one a New York license and two Connecticut.

He was charged with third-degree forgery and possession of alcohol by a minor and released after promising to appear July 15 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

Police at 8:41 p.m. on July 4 cited a 19-year-old New Canaan man for possession of alcohol by a minor and operating an unregistered vehicle after finding beer, wine and booze in his SUV during a stop at God’s Acre.

Police stopped the SUV at Park Street near Seminary Street because its brake lights were not working, according to a police report.

The officer smelled alcohol as he approached the driver, who appeared very nervous. More police arrived and they ordered several youths (all younger than 21) out of the car. Inside, they found a 30-pack of beer, seven more unopened beer cans, a bottle of Peach Schnapps about one-quarter full and three full bottles of white wine.

After stopping the car, the officer could smell alcohol on the woman’s breath and saw that she had bloodshot eyes, Ogrinc said.

She failed field sobriety tests with a blood-alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit, police said. Police said the woman told them she had been at a friend’s house in town.

She was released on $250 bond and scheduled to appear July 18 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
