The Little Red Schoolhouse Open on Saturday, September 22nd 1-3 pm
Saturday, September, 22, 2018 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
A beloved piece of New Canaan history, The Little Red Schoolhouse at 211 Carter Street will open its doors to the town on Saturday, September 22nd, from 1 – 3 pm. Docents, most of whom are past students, will be on hand to guide tours and answer questions. The Little Red Schoolhouse was the last of 11 one room schoolhouses in New Canaan. It was built c.1865 and operated continuously until the retirement of its last teacher Miss Mary Kelley in 1957.
The schoolhouse is charming from the outside, but it is what you will find inside that will impress you the most. The woodburning stove, maps dating back to 1898, Silvermine artist Justin Gruelle’s exquisite paintings of Aesop’s Fables done as part of the WPA, original text books and so much more take you back in time to experience early education in New Canaan.
Come see this remarkable piece of history.
