“Middle East Alliances”
Wednesday, September, 21, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
FreeThe World Affairs Forum presents a Great Decisions lecture with Dr. John Entelis, Professor of Political Science and Associate Director, Middle East Studies Program, Fordham University. Free and open to the public.
“From a proxy war in Yemen to an ongoing civil war in Syria, a number of conflicts have shaken the traditional alignments in the Middle East to their core. As alliances between state and non-state actors in the region are constantly shifting, the U.S. has found itself between a rock and a hard place. In a series of disputes that are far from being black-and-white, what can the U.S. do to secure its interests in the region without causing further damage and disruption?” – Foreign Policy Association
Dr. Entelis received his PhD from New York University and studied Arabic in Cairo, Harvard, and Princeton. He has been awarded several Fulbright awards, including a U.S. Department of Education Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad Fellowship to conduct research in Lebanon, a Senior Fulbright Professorship at the University of Algiers and one at the University of Tunis, and a Fulbright Regional Research Award to Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. Dr. Entelis is the author or coauthor of numerous scholarly publications on the comparative and international politics of the Middle East and North Africa, including Algeria: The Revolution Institutionalized, Culture and Counterculture in Moroccan Politics, State and Society in Algeria, and Islam, Democracy, and the State in North Africa.
