A 76-year-old Gerrish Lane man told police last week that $3,500 in stamps—the resident’s winnings in an auction—had been fraudulently signed for during a Federal Express delivery to his home.

The stamps were from the 1800s, according to a police report. FedEx had made the delivery to the philatelist’s home at about 10 a.m. on May 5, and an individual signed for the stamps with an “indecipherable scribble,” Sgt. Peter Condos of the New Canaan Police Department said.

Condos said police often see scams where items ordered to a home and someone contacts the delivery company saying they’ll pick it up from a service center, then signs for it and makes off with someone else’s goods.
