Local fire and police responded on Monday morning to a report of a car fire at the southbound service station on the Merritt Parkway in New Canaan.

No one was in the black SUV when it became engulfed in flames around 10:38 a.m., officials said.

The matter is in the jurisdiction of Connecticut State Police.

The engine compartment of the vehicle was fully involved, New Canaan fire officials said. The gas pumps at the service station were not involved, officials said.

The car’s operator pulled off of the parkway after smelling burning rubber in the vehicle, according to Fire Chief Jack Hennessey. The fire then erupted under its hood, he said.

At the time of the call, New Canaan fire units were addressing a propane leak on Laurel Road, so members of the Norwalk Fire Department extinguished the car fire, Hennessey said.

It isn’t clear what caused the fire, what was the make and model of the vehicle, where the SUV had come from or who had been in it.

A clerk with state police Troop G said specifics on the incident were not immediately available.
