Police arrested a 24–year-old South Salem, N.Y. man on a drunk driving charge after midnight Sunday after stopping him for traveling 82 mph in a 40 mph zone on Smith Ridge Road.

An officer at about 12:17 a.m. on Oct. 25 clocked the speeding car near the intersection of Country Club Road, according to a police report.

After stopping the vehicle, the officer approached and smelled alcohol on the breath of the driver when speaking to him, the report said. He failed field sobriety tests and a breath test showed that his blood-alcohol level was at nearly twice the legal limit, the report said.

He was charged with driving under the influence and additionally cited for speeding and failure to carry an insurance card.

Police released him on $250 bond and scheduled him to appear in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
