Police fined an Elm Street business $200 after it was found noncompliant during an unannounced tobacco and electronic cigarette inspection. A-1 Cellars, a liquor store at 282 Elm St., was cited for sale of tobacco to a minor and sale of an e-cigarette to a minor following the Oct. 20 inspection, which the New Canaan Police Department conducted with the state. Retailers found to be in compliance included Stewarts Spirits, Walgreens, Vegetable Barn Mobil Marts on South Avenue and the Merritt Parkway, Veggie Barn, Acme and Gulf station.

The Board of Selectmen on Tuesday approved 3-0 the hiring of Christopher Wegrzyn as town sanitarian in the New Canaan Health Department, succeeding Carla DeLucia in the role. Part of the job’s responsibilities include conducting unannounced health inspections at food establishments in town. Human Resources Director Cheryl Pickering-Jones said during the meeting that Wegrzyn, who has worked as an environmental hygienist for the town of Greenwich for nearly 10 years, was a good fit for the department and New Canaan is “very lucky to get him.”

A reminder that locals can meet Republican candidates for elected offices during a Meet-and-Greet to be held 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, October 28, at the New Canaan Nature Center. The New Canaan Republican Town Committee is sponsoring the event. New Canaan’s own Mike Handler, Republican candidate for governor, will also be there.

The Nov. 30 appearance of “Red Notice” author Bill Browder through New Canaan Library got a lot more interesting recently. According to a story in the New York Times, Russian officials farcically are now saying that Browder actually is responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky, Browder’s own lawyer who was imprisoned in 2008 on trumped-up charges and died in jail.

Officials at the New Canaan Chamber of Commerce say there will be a town-wide event from 12 to 2 p.m. on Sunday—even if it won’t be clear until Saturday morning just what that is. Due to expected bad weather, it looks like the scheduled Halloween Parade on Elm Street may have to give way to an alternative, indoor event. Stay tuned to the Chamber’s website and Facebook page for details. The organization will make a call by Saturday morning.

NCPD announced on its Instagram page that three stolen cars have been reported since Oct. 19, on Douglas Road, Myanos Road and Skyview Lane. Each car was unlocked with its keys inside.

New Canaan’s Boyd Harden is to be inducted into the Connecticut Lacrosse Hall of Fame on Nov. 11. The NCHS ’83 grad excelled as a defenseman here—helping to lead the Rams in 1982 to its first undefeated season, at 17-0—and then at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he walked on during his freshman year. Harden received First Team All-FCIAC, First Team All-State and high school All-America honors and also played in the CT North-South Senior All-Star game as a high schooler, and at UNC he helped lead the Tar Heels to the ACC Championship in 1985 and to NCAA Division I National Tournament Semi-Finalist appearances in 1984 and 1985. He currently works at Global Jet Capital.

The New Canaan Toy Store is running a promotion from Oct. 31 to Nov. 5 where for every pound of Halloween candy kids/parents bring into the store, they will receive a $1 credit for use at the Park Street shop. Owner Chris Kilbane said it’s a way to give parents a great way to “manage” the quantity of candy and sugar that their kids consume, “and a great way to have an exciting way for their kids to painlessly give up some of their candy and get something in return.”

Police on Monday arrested a 39-year-old Summer Street man by warrant and charged him with second-degree failure to appear. He hadn’t responded to a 2014 ticket for driving with a suspended license.

The New Canaan Senior Internship Program is looking for businesses and non-profit organizations to host a senior high school student for an internship from May 22 to June 13, 2018. Saxe Middle School will present the fall 5th and 6th grade musical, Disney’s Aladdin Jr. at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 10 and 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11. All performances will take place in the brand-new Saxe Middle School Theater.
