Police midday Friday arrested a 26-year-old Cliffside Park, N.J. man who had used a New Canaan resident’s name to order three iPhones for local delivery.

At about 7:56 p.m. on Thursday, police learned that an account had been opened through AT&T Wireless in a resident’s name and that the smartphones, worth about $3,000 together, were scheduled to be delivered the following day to a house in town, officials said.

At about 10:48 a.m. on March 15, an officer on patrol spotted a vehicle in the area of Fieldcrest Road with an expired New Jersey plate, according to a police report. Following a subsequent stop and investigation, police determined that the man was here to pick up the fraudulently ordered iPhones from a home in the area, the report said.

He was charged with unlawful completion or reproduction of a credit card and criminal attempt to third-degree larceny.

Police released the man on $25,000 bond and scheduled him to appear March 25 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.

“As a reminder, please register your mobile devices to receive alerts any time your crew cards are being used,” police said in a press release. “Furthermore, it is suggested to conduct periodic credit checks to determine if any fraudulent accounts have opened in your name.”

Police are directing residents to the Federal Trade Commission website for more information.
