Around 8:26 p.m., police saw an empty car parked on the side of the road at Lapham and Talmadge Hill Roads with its driver’s side window down, according to a police report.

On approaching the vehicle, the officer got a strong whiff of marijuana and, on peeking in, saw a multicolored smoking pipe in the center console, said Sgt. Carol Ogrinc, the New Canaan Police Department’s public information officer.

The man told police he had some pot and handed over a small amount. He was cited for possession of less than .5 ounces of marijuana and issued a ticket.

A motorist who blew by an officer directing traffic near where South Avenue intersects with the Merritt Parkway later was stopped by that same policeman and charged with reckless driving and disobeying an officer.

The 45-year-old Pound Ridge, N.Y. man moved right through a work area with signage and cones, then a worker motioning for him to slow down and finally the police officer himself, and then sped onto the Merritt Parkway southbound, Ogrinc said.

The officer followed in his cruiser and pulled the car over at Exit 35. The motorist was released on $250 bond and scheduled to appear June 23 in state Superior Court in Norwalk.
