A two-car crash on Smith Ridge Road late Friday morning sent multiple occupants of both vehicles to the hospital, officials said.

It isn’t clear what caused the crash, at the intersection of Michigan Road, just how many people occupied the two cars involved or what was the extent of their injuries.

EMTs with the New Canaan Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported them to Norwalk Hospital, officials said.

Police, fire and paramedics responded to a report of the crash occurred before midday. One car ended up on its roof. Police are directing a single lane of traffic through the area.

NewCanaanite.com will have more information as soon as it is available.

  1. Based on the photos and damage/location, looks like the BMW was on Michigan eastbound trying to cross Smith Ridge. Misjudged and went right in front of minivan. Hope everyone is ok.

  2. Have more details become available?

This is a dangerous intersection, particularly if one is heading westbound on Michigan Road. Visibility into northbound traffic on 123 is compromised. Cars heading northbound come around a curve, often at high speed, making it a difficult turn.

Plus, cell service can be spotty there. My wife was among the first on the scene at a previous accident and had to drive about a mile south on 123 to call 911.

  3. Got some info, as promised: The collision was between a vehicle traveling northbound on Smith Ridge Road and a vehicle traveling eastbound on Michigan Road—in other words, crossing 123 toward that short stretch that comes into North Wilton Road. It could be that the eastbound vehicle driver is cited for a stop sign violation, but the report is not finished yet. No one suffered serious injuries.

    • The driver on Michigan did not run the stop sign. There was no citation. There were no witnesses at the scene so It cannot be determined if the driver on Smith Ridge was speeding. It would appear so as the car that was struck turned over and slid clear across the intersection.
