Things don’t always go as planned and sometimes it is hard to go with the flow when thrown off course. Since I take comfort in the general predictability of my everyday routine (not in a twitchy, OCD kind of way) making adjustments can be jarring. No one likes drastic change of plans, construction detours, or even soup of the day, but we manage. When it comes to change around New Canaan, especially with regard to its architectural landscape, many townspeople, like me, are resistant. That is why I am eager to keep our town looking quaint and historic.

Police: New Canaan Man Yells at Woman About Smoking Cigarette, Slaps Her, Gets Arrested

Police on Sunday afternoon arrested a 62-year-old New Canaan man for slapping a woman who was smoking a cigarette in a designated area outside Waveny Pool. At about 4:30 p.m. on July 21, officers were dispatched to the parking lot at the town-owned facility on a report of a Jelliff Mill Road man who had slapped a woman in the face, police said.

Investigating officers determined that the man approached the woman as she stood outside the pool in a designated smoking area, according to a police report. He yelled that she shouldn’t be smoking around children and “she should be considerate of the environment,” the report said. He then struck her in the left cheek, it said. Police charged him with second-degree breach peace, a misdemeanor.

Moynihan: If Covia Building Is Not Buyable, Renovate Police HQ To Move In Board of Ed

New Canaan’s highest elected official said Thursday that if a downtown building he’d been eyeing as a possible future home for police and school district administrators is no longer available, as rumored, then the town should move forward with plans to renovate the police headquarters on South Avenue and move the Board of Education in there. Asked whether the Covia building at Elm and Grove Streets was under contract, First Selectman Kevin Moynihan said during a media briefing, “That’s my understanding.” Covia could not be reached for comment.

Asked what the town would do if Covia is off the table, Moynihan said, “The thought now for South Avenue would be to knock down the rear of the building and build a whole new addition at the rear, with three floors, so the Board of Education would have all the space they need on the top floor.”

The town pays about $300,000 in annual rent for the New Canaan Public Schools’ administrative headquarters at the corner of Forest Street and Locust Avenue. A town committee in December 2017 recommended that Waveny or Irwin should be considered as alternatives. Moynihan initially said the Board of Ed should move into unused space at the Police Department, then targeted the Covia (formerly ‘Unimin’) building at 258 Elm St. as a possibility.

Police: Drunk-Driving Charge for Man Clocked at 50 MPH in 30 MPH Zone

Police before dawn Thursday arrested a 35-year-old Greenwich man and charged him with driving under the influence. At about 1:27 a.m. on July 11, an officer on patrol clocked a vehicle traveling northbound on Old Stamford Road at 50 mph in a 30 mph zone, according to a police report. The driver didn’t stop right away, but steered his car onto South Avenue and then turned down Oak Street without signaling, the report said. There, the officer stopped him and detected signs of impairment, it said. The driver failed field sobriety tests and a subsequent test established his blood-alcohol level at .14, nearly twice the legal limit.
