Group Exhibition Celebrates Summer, Opening Reception On June 4

Heather Gaudio Fine Art announces the upcoming exhibition, Waterways III, on view from June 5 through September 6. The group show celebrates summer showcasing paintings, photography, sculpture and works on paper by 13 artists who have captured the beauty and power of water in their work.

Featured artists include Shawna Ankenbrandt; Sophia Collier; Michael Dweck; Bonnie Edelman (Ridgefield); Zaria Forman; Karen Gunderson; Tanja Hollander; Cornelia Kubler Kavanagh (Wilson Point); Kim Keever; Wayne Levin; Roxanne Faber Savage (Fairfield); Samantha Keely Smith and Eve Stockton. The exhibition opening reception will be held on Wednesday, June 4 from 5 to 8pm.

Featured Artists

Finding inspiration in the vastness of the ocean and man’s interaction with it, Shawna Ankenbrandt’s photography captures this relationship. Growing up in a landlocked state, Ankenbrandt looks anew at the ocean and her fresh take is revealed in her photography through its dramatic composition. Her work is held in the corporate collections of Fred Segal, Santa Monica, CA; Juicy Couture, East Hampton, NY; Stanley Law, Los Angeles, CA and in the private collections of Jamie Lee Curtis and Steve Mnuchin.

Sophia Collier describes her artistic practice as a form of basic inquiry. Using the tools of science, technology and deep contemplation as microscopes and stop action cameras to examine reality, she creates carved acrylic water surfaces. The inspiration for these works is the idea of reaching into the water and picking up a piece of the surface to keep forever. Collier developed software that enables her to simulate the movement of wind across water and also mix in information from other rhythmic sources such as pulse, breath or dance music. She has exhibited in SCOPE Miami 2012 and SCOPE New York 2013.

Michael Dweck is a visual artist known for his seductive photographic style and pursuit of alluring subject matter, principally the female form and locales that offer their own particular enchantments. Dweck’s images, while often abstracting the female body in a painterly swirl of watery refractions, celebrate the physical charm of the feminine form and the meditative isolation of the underwater world. His work has become part of important international art collections and has been exhibited extensively throughout the world including solo exhibitions in New York, Belgium, Hamburg and Tokyo and at the Fototeca de Cuba Museum in Havana.

Bonnie Edelman has traveled the world over working with renowned photographers such as Sante D’Orazio, Russell James and Francesco Scavullo during her distinguished career in publishing. She has brought her finely tuned editorial eye to her career as a fine art photographer and to her book,Sermo Per Equus, described as “truly sublime” by Architectural Digest. Her body of work entitled SCAPES (Land, Sea, Sky), captures the colors of nature and allows the artist to see the world in blurs of color rather than in detail. Her modern abstract photographs have garnered the attention of renowned designers Nate Berkus, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kathryn Ireland, Evan Lobel, Jonathan Rosen and Kate Kelly Smith, SVP Publishing Director at Hearst. The Murphy and Dine Gallery and Spazio 522 Gallery, both in Chelsea, NYC, in addition to LOT 84 of Mt. Kisco, NY, all featured solo shows of the artist’s work. Bonnie’s pieces are held in the private collections of Rob Thomas and select public collections that include Ralph Lauren-Hong Kong, London, Budapest, Berlin, Copenhagen, Amsterdam; The whole of Bellevue Hospital’s Hospice Wing, The VNS Corridor, New York, NY; Field Point Private Bank and Trust, New York, and the NFL.

Zaria Forman’s pastel drawings possess an appreciation for the beauty and vastness of the ever-changing sea. The artist explores moments of transition, turbulence and tranquility and their impact on the viewer. Her works serve as powerful reminders of how small mankind is when confronted with the powerful forces of nature.

An award-winning visual artist and printmaker, Roxanne Faber Savage’s work is comprised of solarplate intaglio, photo etching, silk aquatint, silk screen and monoprint. Mark making, symbols and the “unconscious line” are central to her visual story telling. Working with crayons, paint, mixed materials and printmaking, she layers and exposes, revealing a passion for working with an etching press and handling tactile materials. She maintains a vibrant exhibition schedule; exhibiting in prestigious North American Boston Printmakers 2013 Print Biennial, Boston, MA and at Art fairs in Miami Beach, “New Materials Art Fair” & “Clio Art Projects,” New York City. Her works are held in numerous private and corporate collections including Bonanza Productions/Film & Television, NYC, CA; Ocean House, Watch Hill, R.I.; Becker & Becker Architects, OCTAGON LP, NY; Cohen and Wolf, P.C. In her series of “sea paintings,” Karen Gunderson transforms blackness into an illuminating experience. The paintings are large, edge-to-edge views of nocturnal seas. Through the use of an ever-so-delicate range of tonality in her hues, she poetically portrays the surface of water as it is seen in its infinitely variable moods. Her work has been exhibited in the United States, and internationally, for more than 40 years. Tanja Hollander‘s landscape photography propelled her to an international career — infinity-filled images of distant horizons that blur the demarcation between land, sea and air. She has shown regularly in Maine, New York and Boston and has twice been selected for the Portland Museum of Art Biennial, winning a purchase prize in 2007. Her current project, “Are You Really My Friend: The Facebook Portrait Project” will be exhibited at MASS MoCA in 2017.

Cornelia Kubler Kavanagh has had five solo exhibitions in New York City. Her sculpture has been exhibited at the 2005 Venice Biennale, three OPEN exhibitions at Venice-Lido, Miami’s design district during Art Basel Miami Beach, New York’s American Museum of Natural History, the Peabody-Essex Museum in Salem, MA, SOFA, Chicago, IL, and numerous museums and galleries throughout the country. She currently has five sculptures on display at the Smithsonian’s Sant Ocean Hall in the National Museum of Natural History, Washington, DC. Important installations include the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven, Yale New Haven Hospital, the Dwight School in Englewood, NJ, the Lancaster Winery in Healdsburg, CA and the University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro, N.J.

Kim Keever’s earlier landscapes, that are at first glance redolent of the Hudson River School and the German Romantic painters, are actually detailed miniature scenes that he builds himself, places in a 200-gallon tank, submerges in water, and then photographs. The landscapes and the abstract images all have paint dispersing through the water adding a certain character to the constructed landscape in the tank and a high degree of randomness to the abstract images. His works are held in numerous public collections including Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC; Museum of Modern Art, NYC and Hirshhorn Museum, Washington, DC.

A rare and gifted photographer, Wayne Levin takes the viewer on journeys through underwater landscapes from the waters of the Hawaiian Islands to Costa Rica and Micronesia. Levin has a way of capturing moments in black and white that have been described as “eloquent visual statements of a mysterious world.” Select public and corporate collections include Museum of Modern Art, New York; Datz Museum of Art, Seoul, Korea; National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Honolulu, Hawaii; St. Johns Hospital, Santa Monica, California; Banana Republic; The Contemporary Museum, Honolulu, Hawaii and Honolulu Academy of Arts, Hawaii.

Translucent layers of paint, ethereal brushwork and hard-edged sweeping gestures depict a timeless place that hovers between dream and reality. Samantha Keely Smith’s paintings strive to reconcile the inner world of instinct with the external world that is both beautiful and hostile in its natural grandeur. Mapping the place where these two worlds intersect, Smith’s work is simultaneously alluring and menacing. Her works are held in the private collections of Denise Rich; John Kluge Jr; Hilda M. Bacardi; Lloyd Cole and Andrew Zolli.

Eve Stockton’s woodcuts are inspired by close observation of nature and an eclectic interest in science. Utilizing a multifaceted background in architecture and art, Eve is able to engage the variables of printmaking allowing her to produce an ongoing body of dynamic graphic images. Stockton’s varying levels of abstraction can simultaneously evoke landscapes and cellular activity. Heather Gaudio Fine Art specializes in both emerging and established artists, offering works on paper, photography, painting and sculpture. Offering five shows per year, the exhibitions are designed to showcase important talent and provide artwork appealing to a broad range of interests.
