The nearby Silvermine neighborhood is rich in history and personality, not the least of which is its designation as an arts colony. Please register online at newcanaanlibrary.org.
Covering parts of Wilton, Norwalk and New Canaan is the unique valley known as Silvermine. Originally bustling with mills, as industry modernized and the mills quieted Silvermine then became popular as an artist’s haven. Local resident Samuel Schmitt is the author of the book Silvermine, part of the “Images of America” series printed by Arcadia Publishing, and will present a talk and slide show on the history of Silvermine based on his book. He will trace the history of the area, with special emphasis on the early Silvermine artists.

Samuel Schmitt is the grandson of the painter Carl Schmitt, who was one of the early members of the Silvermine artist colony. He is also the Director of the Carl Schmitt Foundation in Wilton, which is dedicated to the legacy of Carl Schmitt and the early Silvermine artists, and the author of Carl Schmitt: The Vision of Beauty.
