New Canaan High School SLOBs Plan First Meeting
Saturday, September, 19, 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
The New Canaan High School Service League of Boys (SLOBs) will hold its first general meeting of the school year on Saturday, September 19, 2014 at 2PM, in the New Canaan High School cafeteria. The club fosters the parent-son relationship in a philanthropic organization committed to community service and leadership development. The year’s first speaker will be Dave Hunt, a New Canaan resident and retired businessman who volunteers his time in community leadership positions. Mr. Hunt will talk about volunteerism in New Canaan.
Since its inception in 2004, SLOBs members have volunteered over 26,000 hours to benefit New Canaan and Fairfield County philanthropies. SLOBs currently has 245 boys enrolled and is one of the largest and most popular clubs at New Canaan High School.
Membership is open to New Canaan High School boys in grades 9 through 11. They are required to volunteer a minimum of 10 hours, and attend general membership meetings 4 times throughout each school year. All boys must sign up with a parent, and parents are required to volunteer a total of 5 hours and attend 3 meetings per year.
After the general meeting, SLOBs can earn 1 service hour by working with the New Canaan Beautification League (NCBL) on a back-to-school fall clean-up, beautifying the entrance to the New Canaan High School and the Memorial Garden. It’s been over a decade since the New Canaan High School entrance garden was planted by the NCBL in 2002. Since then, both groups have contributed to its maintenance, with special help from John Howe and his NC Parks Department. The garden will be planted directly after the first SLOBs meeting at about 2:45PM.
