Just published this May, Deep Water is the story behind the infamous Coronado Company, a $100 million dollar global drug cartel that began in her hometown of Coronado, California. Intrigued by the rumors she had always heard about the Coronado Company, Nichols was determined to understand its history. Deep Water tells the story of the teenaged surfers from California who started swimming drugs from Mexico to the US, the Spanish teacher who helped them grow their empire, and how it all came crashing down.
Katherine Nichols, as a staff writer and freelancer for over 20 years, has written hundreds of articles for publications, including the New York Times Magazine, the San Francisco Chronicle,
Harvard Magazine, the Associated Press, and the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. She’s also written, co-
